What is an ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist is a specialist dedicated to eye health and vision. His or her remit covers the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of eye diseases and disorders. To do so, he or she must possess advanced medical and technological skills. As you can see, the ophthalmologist is essential to maintaining and improving patients' vision.

Training and career path to become an ophthalmologist

Before applying for a job as an ophthalmologist, you'll need to complete a long and rigorous academic program that's not always easy to navigate. Whether you're a high-school student or just curious, let's take a look at how to become an ophthalmologist.

To become an ophthalmologist, you need a general scientific baccalaureate, followed by health studies such as the Parcours Accès Santé Spécifique (PASS) or the Licence avec Accès Santé (L.AS). Once this has been completed, the student must follow a training course in general medicine, including theory, practical work and internships. At the end of this curriculum, they must sit the ECN (Examen Classant National) to determine their choice of specialization. This is followed by 5 years of ophthalmology studies under the internship system, during which they learn in detail about eye surgery, pathology and physiology.

On completion of this course, the young ophthalmologist possesses the following skills:

  • Diagnostic: the ability to interpret advanced examinations to detect pathologies and propose appropriate treatments.
  • Surgical: mastery of intervention techniques to correct retinal malformations and certain pathologies.
  • Technological: the ability to use modern technical tools effectively.

In addition, they must demonstrate good communication skills to help patients understand complex medical concepts; empathy when confronted with serious diagnoses; effective stress management when required to intervene precisely or urgently; rapid decision-making skills; sharp clinical judgment; and the ability to work effectively as part of a team comprising nurses, optometrists and general practitioners.

Roles and responsibilities of the ophthalmologist

The ophthalmology specialist performs a wide variety of medical procedures on a daily basis:

  • Clinical care: the ophthalmologist performs comprehensive eye examinations to assess the patient's visual health. This includes vision tests to diagnose refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. He is also responsible for detecting and treating various eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and eye infections.
  • Surgical procedures: ophthalmologists are trained to perform surgical procedures. This may include cataract surgery, laser vision correction, glaucoma surgery or retinal surgery. They must not only master surgical techniques, but also the management of post-operative complications.
  • Research and teaching: ophthalmologists play a key role in medical research to improve existing treatments and develop new ones. They may take part in clinical trials, publish scientific articles and take part in medical conferences. As teachers, they train medical students, interns and residents.
  • Specialized consultations: ophthalmologists often work in collaboration with other health professionals to treat complex conditions. They may, for example, cooperate with neurologists in cases of neuro-ophthalmological diseases, or with pediatricians for pediatric visual disorders. They can also offer specialist advice in areas such as ocular plastic surgery or visual rehabilitation.

Working environment and equipment

Different workplaces

When it comes to practicing their profession, ophthalmologists have several choices:

  • Privatepractice : this practice allows ophthalmologists to choose their equipment, hours and team. They treat a wide range of cases, with a predominance for minor pathologies and light interventions. What's more, practitioners develop a loyal patient base, as care is personalized and follow-up is regular. There is greater freedom than elsewhere to practice, and fees can be set as they see fit.
  • Health centers: these structures are often located in densely populated areas. They treat a wide variety of cases, and have a higher patient flow than practices, which influences the frequency and duration of appointments. In addition, they are multi-disciplinary entities whose equipment is generally shared. Thanks to subsidized models, these health centers offer care at more affordable rates than practices, enabling patients on modest incomes to access quality care.
  • Hospital: in this sector, ophthalmologists deal with rare cases, including emergencies requiring modern equipment. Thanks to subsidies, underprivileged populations can obtain specific care here.
  • University medical centers: in these centers, ophthalmologists can combine clinical practice with research and teaching. They work on the ophthalmic techniques of tomorrow, take part in clinical trials and pass on their know-how to students.

Cutting-edge technology and equipment

Ophthalmology is a high-tech specialty. Recent advances in diagnostic and surgical equipment have revolutionized the treatment of eye diseases, enabling more accurate diagnoses and less invasive treatments. Among the technological tools used by ophthalmologists are Optical Coherence Tomography, Fluorescein and Indocyanine Green Angiography, Corneal Topography and Optical Biometry, all of which can now be used to sharpen diagnosis and increase efficiency.

In terms of treatment, there are also many ways of improving the quality of care provided to patients, whether through lasers, surgical microscopes or modern ultrasound techniques.

These practical technological advances are complemented by a wide range of software applications to improve patient data management systems.

Jobs and specialization in ophthalmology

The market is dynamic and offers many opportunities for specialization. Ophthalmologists can focus on areas such as refractive surgery, retinal disease management or pediatrics. Career development can also include roles in research, teaching or even administrative management in healthcare establishments.

Salary and working conditions of an ophthalmologist

In general, experienced ophthalmologists enjoy a very attractive salary, the fruit of long and rigorous training.

This level of remuneration is subject to a number of factors, including :

  • Experience: as in all professions, ophthalmologists at the start of their careers generally earn lower salaries. As they gain experience and build up a loyal patient base, their salaries will automatically increase.
  • Geographical location: when setting up a practice, there are a number of criteria to take into account that will influence income. These include the standard of living of the local population, the rates charged by other practitioners, and population density.
  • Practice settings: as we saw earlier, ophthalmologists can work in a wide variety of settings, including private practices, dental centers and hospitals. These environments will inevitably have an impact on income. A self-employed ophthalmologist will generally earn more than a salaried ophthalmologist.
  • Tools: the use of modern equipment and cutting-edge technology can increase the fees charged within the ophthalmologist's practice, thereby boosting his or her income.

What's more, while ophthalmology is a demanding profession, it generally offers a better work-life balance than other medical specialties. Schedules can be more regular and emergencies less frequent, enabling better planning of personal time.
