What is a gynecologist?
A gynecologist is a medical professional with expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and disorders of the female reproductive system. This specialty covers a wide range of practices related to reproductive health, managing pregnancy and childbirth, and treating gynecological disorders. It is essential to women's fitness and reproductive health.
Training and career paths to become a gynecologist
To apply for a job as a gynecologist, you need to follow one of the longest and most demanding academic paths available. This rigorous training ensures that gynecologists are the best they can be, since their practice can be life-or death-threatening for patients. As in most medical specialties, errors must be kept to a minimum, and the gynecologist must be able to adapt to any situation presented to him or her. To this end, we'd like to explain how to become a gynecologist.
Before embarking on the jungle of secondary studies, the aspiring gynecologist must obtain a general scientific baccalaureate. While other baccalaureates can lead to medical studies, the scientific stream has the advantage of providing the essential foundations for this career path. Once this initial diploma has been obtained, students can move on to the Parcours Accès Santé Spécifique (PASS) or the Licence avec Accès Santé (L.AS). A year later, and subject to success, they can enter the two years of general medical studies common to all specialties. At the end of the curriculum, they will sit the final externship exams (EDN and ECOS), the results of which will give them the opportunity to choose their specialty (in order of priority according to ranking). Once committed to specializing in gynecology, he or she will have 5 years of gynecology studies under the internship system, enabling him or her to learn in greater detail all the nuances of this profession and apply them within French healthcare structures.

- Management: monitoring the various stages of pregnancy.
Graduate gynecologists can also continue their studies by specializing. Among the many sub-fields of gynecology they can choose from are obstetrics, surgery, oncology and pediatrics.
Roles and responsibilities of the gynecologist
The gynecologist's roles and responsibilities are varied and cover many aspects of women's health, such as
- Routine and preventive examinations
- Annual gynecological examination: the gynecologist performs routine physical examinations, including breast palpation, pelvic examination and screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These examinations are crucial for the early detection of potential problems such as gynecological cancers or infections.
- Cervical smears (PAP test): performs cervical smears to detect abnormal or precancerous cervical cells.
- Contraceptive advice: advises on and prescribes suitable contraceptive methods.
- Managing pregnancy and childbirth
- Prenatal monitoring : the gynecologist monitors the health of the mother and fetus throughout pregnancy, with regular consultations, ultrasounds and prenatal screening tests.
- Labor and delivery management : oversees the labor and delivery process, ensuring that both mother and baby remain healthy. This includes pain management, monitoring vital signs, and performing natural or caesarean deliveries.
- Postnatal care: provides care after delivery to monitor the mother's physical recovery, and advises on breastfeeding or post-partum contraception methods.
- Diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological diseases
- Gynecological infections : the gynecologist identifies and treats vaginal, uterine and ovarian infections.

- Gynecological cancer treatment : in collaboration with oncologists, the gynecologist treats gynecological cancers through surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
- Post-treatment monitoring: following cancer treatment, the gynecologist monitors patients for recurrence and manages long-term side effects.
- Surgical procedures
- Minor surgery: the gynecologist performs minor surgical procedures such as cervical and endometrial biopsies, excision of ovarian cysts, dilatation or curettage.
- Major surgery : more complex procedures such as hysterectomies (removal of the uterus), myomectomies (removal of uterine fibroids), laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis or ectopic pregnancies.
- Infertility surgery: he performs procedures to treat infertility, such as laparoscopies to unblock fallopian tubes or remove adhesions.
- Sexual and reproductive health advice
- Fertility : the gynecologist provides advice and treatment for fertility problems, including assisted reproduction options such as artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
- Menopause : helps patients manage menopausal symptoms, such as hot flushes, sleep disorders or hormonal changes, and prescribes hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if necessary.
- Education and awareness : informs patients about reproductive and sexual health issues, promoting regular check-ups and healthy behaviors.
A gynecologist's working environment and day-to-day practice
When it comes to practicing, gynecologists have several choices:
- Private practice: gynecologists offer routine consultations, pregnancy monitoring, screening and treatment. This enables them to create a more continuous and personalized relationship with patients, as well as greater autonomy in managing their practice.
- Clinics : gynecologists treat more specific cases, such as reproductive care or fertility. They can also perform minor surgical procedures.
- Hospitals : whether private or public, gynecologists offer a full range of care and complex procedures on a salaried basis.
There are also environments where gynecologists are less present, such as NGOs, palliative care centers or the pharmaceutical industry.
Key skills and qualities required of a gynecologist
To be successful in their profession, gynecologists not only need to possess all the skills detailed above, but also demonstrate certain indispensable human qualities such as empathy, patience and the ability to listen in order to establish a relationship of trust with patients. They also need to be pedagogical in order to clearly explain diagnoses and treatment options.
Career opportunities and prospects for a gynecologist
A career as a gynecologist is full of challenges and opportunities. Whether they specialize further, decide to teach, participate in research or run their own practice, the gynecologist in search of novelties won't have enough of a career to exhaust the possibilities. What's more, constant demand ensures job stability and linearity of progression, enabling him to concentrate fully on achieving his goals.
Gynaecologist's salary
Generally speaking, gynecologists enjoy a comfortable income, thanks to the expertise required for their practice. However, remuneration figures vary according to a number of factors:
- Experience: as in all professions, gynecologists at the start of their careers generally earn lower salaries. As they gain experience and build up a loyal patient base, their salaries will automatically increase.
- Geographical location: when setting up a practice, there are a number of criteria to take into account that will influence income. These include the standard of living of the local population, the rates charged by other practitioners, and population density.
- Practice locations: as we saw earlier, gynecologists can practice in very different conditions. These environments will inevitably have an impact on income. A self-employed gynecologist will generally earn more than a salaried one.

Challenges and stakes of the gynecologist's profession
Medical practices in gynecology are constantly evolving as a result of technological advances, new scientific discoveries and changes in societal expectations. Here are a few key aspects of this evolution.
Technological challenges
- Technological innovations : the introduction of new technologies has transformed gynecological practice. Laparoscopic and robotic systems now enable minimally invasive surgery, reducing recovery times and post-operative complications. In addition, advances in medical imaging, such as 3D and 4D ultrasound, offer more detailed visualizations of internal structures and fetuses, improving diagnostic accuracy.
- Personalized care: personalized care is becoming increasingly common in gynecology. Thanks to genetic tests and biomarkers, it is possible to better understand risks for conditions such as ovarian or breast cancer. This personalization enables treatments and follow-up to be tailored to each patient's specific needs.
- Telemedicine : this recent practice has taken on an important role in gynecology, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. It enables patients to have access to medical consultations at a distance, which is particularly beneficial for those living in rural areas or with mobility constraints. Telemedicine also facilitates pregnancy monitoring and the management of chronic conditions.
- Reproductive medicine: Medically assisted reproduction (MAP) techniques continue to progress. Innovations in in vitro fertilization (IVF), oocyte and embryo cryopreservation, and pre-implantation genetic testing increase the chances of conception and reduce the risk of genetic disease. These advances enable us to provide better support for couples who have difficulty conceiving.
Societal issues
- Ethical and deontological issues: by its very nature, the profession of gynecologist requires constant reflection and updating of practices to guarantee care that respects women.
- Informed consent: this is now a fundamental principle of medical ethics. Gynecologists must ensure that patients fully understand the procedures, risks and benefits before giving their consent. This is particularly important for surgical procedures, fertility treatments and genetic testing.
- Confidentiality and privacy: in gynecology, where the subjects dealt with are often sensitive, this respect is paramount. Gynecologists must protect patients' personal data. The use of electronic medical records must be secured to avoid data breaches.
- Reproductive health and women's rights: gynecologists play a key role in defending these rights. They have to navigate between local laws and regulations, cultural and religious beliefs and the individual needs of patients. Topics such as abortion, contraception and PMA can give rise to intense debate. Gynecologists must provide care that is impartial and respectful of all.
- Equity and access to care: another major challenge for gynecologists. They must combat the socio-economic, racial and geographical disparities that can prevent some patients from accessing quality care. This includes a commitment to providing accessible reproductive health care and advocating health policies that reduce these inequalities.
In short, the profession of gynecologist is not only among the most important in the medical sector, but also one of the most challenging from the practitioner's point of view. By combining the stakes, the challenges, the diversity of tasks and the prospects for advancement, this specialist in women's health is assured of a career rich in every respect.
