What is a neurologist?

Training and career path to become a neurologist

Before getting to the heart - or rather, the brain - of this profession, let's take a look at the path to becoming a neurologist. The academic curriculum for this profession is one of the longest and, above all, one of the most difficult. It requires continuous dedication and rigor on the part of the student over several years, to ensure mastery of the essential skills.

First and foremost, students wishing to embark on this path must obtain a general scientific baccalaureate. While other diplomas can lead to medical studies, the science stream provides the essential foundations for this pathway, and without them, it will be difficult (but not impossible!) to catch up.

Once this initial diploma is in hand, the new student can choose between the Parcours Accès Santé Spécifique (PASS) or the Licence avec Accès Santé (L.AS). One year later, and subject to success, they can enter the first cycle of general medical studies, common to all specialties and lasting 3 years (the PASS and L.AS count as the first). At the end of these three years, the student obtains the Diplôme de Formation Générale en Sciences Médicales (DFGSM) and enters the second cycle as an extern. This, too, lasts 3 years, and enables the student to deepen his or her knowledge thanks to an equitable balance between theoretical courses and hospital practice.

At the end of this general curriculum, students sit the end-of-externship exams (EDN and ECOS), the results of which give them the opportunity to choose their specialty (priority is defined by ranking). It is at this point that the student can choose to train as a neurologist.

Once committed to specializing in neurology, he will have 5 years of study left under the internship system, enabling him to learn in detail all the nuances of this profession and apply them within French healthcare structures. When all is said and done, he'll have a degree in neurology, and be in a position to apply for a job as a neurologist!

Technical and clinical skills

• Ability to perform lumbar punctures: this procedure involves removing cerebrospinal fluid for analysis. The neurologist must master the technique, know the indications and contraindications, and be able to interpret the results to diagnose infections, inflammations or hemorrhages.
• Knowledge of neurological diseases and their treatment : The neurologist must be familiar with the clinical occurrences, evolution and therapeutic options concerning a large number of pathologies such as stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, brain tumors or peripheral neuropathies.
• Neurosurgical skills: some neurologists choose to specialize in neurosurgery. This involves studying and acquiring additional skills such as, for example, stereotaxis or neuronavigation.
