Welcome to this article on the profession of Otolaryngologist, more commonly known as ENT. In the following lines, you'll learn all about this specialist career. Warm up your cup of coffee and join us on a journey into the mysterious world of the face!

What is an ENT specialist?

Simply put, an ENT is a specialist in diseases of the ear, nose and throat. While he treats a variety of conditions and all types of patients, he is best known and recognized by parents of young children, who are more often prone to ear infections and other hearing disorders.

Role and responsibilities of an ENT doctor

Like all specialist doctors, ENT doctors have a wide range of responsibilities. First and foremost, he or she has a preventive role to play, conveying the right behaviors to adopt in order to limit the development of ear, nose and throat diseases. Beyond these societal responsibilities, the heart of his profession requires him to perform complex surgeries, prescribe and monitor medical treatments for chronic or acute illnesses, and rehabilitate certain patients suffering from speech or hearing disorders - all skills that are passed on to him during his studies.

ENT training and career path

To become a ENT specialist, you need to study for 11 years. Yes, you read that right! 11 years of intensive, complex study, enabling you to tackle every aspect of a profession that leaves nothing to chance. This course combines rigor and slowness to ensure the highest possible degree of expertise, because like other medical professions, ENT specialists play a decisive role in the health of the patients they see. In some cases, the lives of these patients are at stake, which means they must keep errors to an absolute minimum. Since the path to becoming an ENT specialist can sometimes be convoluted, let's try to retrace it in stages.

The first step is to obtain a scientific baccalaureate. Although this is not compulsory, it is highly recommended, as it provides the essential grounding for the next 11 years. Once this first diploma has been obtained, the baccalaureate holder can choose between two courses of study: the Parcours Accès Santé Spécifique (PASS) or the Licence avec Accès Santé (L.AS). One year later, and subject to success, they can enter the first cycle of general medical studies, common to all specialties and lasting 3 years (the PASS and L.AS count as the first). At the end of these three years, he or she obtains the Diplôme de Formation Générale en Sciences Médicales (DFGSM) and enters the second cycle as an extern. This too lasts 3 years, and enables students to deepen their knowledge thanks to an equitable balance between theoretical courses and practical hospital work. At the end of the program, students sit the end-of-externship exams (EDN and ECOS), the results of which determine their specialty (according to an order of priority based on ranking).

Once enrolled in the otolaryngology specialization, they will have to complete a third and final 5-year cycle of studies to become an ENT under the internship system, enabling them to learn in greater detail all the nuances of this profession and apply them within French healthcare structures.

That's it! After a decade of revision and exams, the old student has become a young ENT. He can now apply for ENT jobs. This doesn't mean he'll never learn again. Throughout his career, he'll need to keep learning about new topics in his discipline, so as not to be left behind by technologies and discoveries.
