The basic salary of an EHPAD director
Average starting salary
At the start of their career, EHPAD directors generallyearn between 2,500 and 3,000 euros net per month. This amount depends on the type of structure (public, private or associative), but also on the initial diploma and previous supervisory or management experience. In the public sector, remuneration is governed by a statutory salary scale. In the private sector, there is more room for negotiation.
Salary progression with seniority
With experience, the salary of an EHPAD director can evolve significantly. A director who has been in post for several years in a medium-sized establishment can earn between 3,500 and 4,500 euros net per month, or even more in certain private groups or high-capacity establishments. To this may be added annual bonuses, performance-related bonuses and benefits in kind (housing, vehicle, telephone).
Factors influencing remuneration
Type of structure: public, private or associative
The sector in which you work has a direct impact on your remuneration:
- Public sector: remuneration is regulated, leaving little room for negotiation, but in return providing a degree of job security and social benefits.
- The private sector: offers more attractive salaries, especially in large groups, but with profitability requirements and increased pressure on results.
- The non-profit sector: offers an intermediate level of remuneration, often correlated with stronger human values than elsewhere.
Size of facility and geographical location
The larger the EHPAD (number of beds, budget, supervised staff), the higher the director's salary.
At the same time, establishments located in the Île-de-France region, in a metropolis or in a high-demand area will offer higher salary levels to meet demand.
Of course, geographical location will also influence workload and the complexity of assignments.
Specific responsibilities and workload
A director who manages several establishments or is involved in cross-functional projects (quality certification, site opening, regional coordination) may be eligible for better job offers and higher remuneration. The versatility of missions, regulatory exposure and human resources management are all valued parameters.
Possible additional remuneration
Performance and management bonuses
In many of these high value-added structures, variable bonuses are awarded according to the achievement of objectives: budget balance, occupancy rate, resident satisfaction, successful external audits, etc.
While it is difficult to give precise figures given the diversity of practices, supplements can amount to the equivalent of 5 to 20% of annual salary.
Benefits in kind and various allowances
The position of EHPAD director may come with the following benefits:
- Company car
- Electronic equipment
- Meal allowance
- Housing allowance
Comparison with other positions in the medical-social sector
Hospital or clinic director
Hospital directors, particularly in the public hospital sector, enjoy higher remuneration, up to 5,000 to 8,000 euros net per month for equivalent experience. Likewise, the type of establishment and factors of variation can further inflate this amount.
Healthcare executives or department heads
Healthcare managers and department heads in medical-social establishments have more modest salaries, often between 2,500 and 3,800 euros net per month, depending on their seniority and hierarchical responsibility. Although their role is just as essential, it is more focused on operations than overall management, which explains the difference.
Salary development prospects
Internal mobility or structural change
A change of structure can be a lever for advancing the remuneration of EHPAD directors. Some directors, for example, move from the voluntary sector to the private sector to enhance their experience, while others opt for internal mobility within a large group, enabling them to move to a more strategic position or to the management of several sites.
Moving into general or regional management positions
After several years at the head of a facility, it's possible to move into cross-functional positions: general management of a division, regional coordination, operations or project management within a group. These functions are better remunerated, with salaries that can exceed 6,000 or 7,000 euros net per month.
In short, the income of an EHPAD director varies widely according to experience, type of structure, region and responsibilities, but whatever the conditions of exercise chosen, they will remain attractive, while allowing the most ambitious to develop them over the course of their career.
