Job description: Pedodontist

Barthélemy

All job sheets

Many children are afraid of going to the dentist. This fear, unfounded but widespread, is internalized by adults. Not so for our offspring. Anxiety, crying, non-cooperation... all attitudes that can make it difficult for the dentist to intervene. To help them through this ordeal and treat dental pathologies specific to the early years, we need to train pedodontists, i.e. dentists dedicated to children. In this article, we'll take a look at their functions and the scope of their practice.

What is a pedodontist?

Pedodontics, also known as pediatric dentistry, is the specialty of dental care for infants, children and adolescents. It should not be confused with the profession of dental surgeon, although both perform comparable tasks. Pedodontists play a crucial role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dental problems in young patients. Pedodontics is distinguished by its specific approach, adapted to the needs and behaviors of children.

Role and responsibilities of the pedodontist

Given the educational dimension of their profession, the day-to-day tasks of pedodontists vary significantly from those of conventional dentists. Here's a non-exhaustive list:

  • Children's dental care : the pedodontist focuses on children's oral health, from the first tooth through to adolescence. He or she is responsible for initial assessment, regular check-ups, dental X-rays and the development of personalized treatment plans. Routine care includes professional teeth cleaning, application of fluoride and dental sealants to prevent cavities, and early orthodontic treatment.
  • Cavity prevention and treatment: Cavity prevention is a major issue for this profession. Pedodontists teach children and their parents good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing. They can also prescribe preventive treatments such as dental sealants or fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel. When decay develops, the pedodontist is responsible for treating it with fillings, pediatric crowns or, in severe cases, root canal treatment.
  • Managing children's behavior and anxiety: pedodontists often have to deal with anxious or fearful children. They must therefore adopt appropriate behavior management techniques, such as positive communication, appropriate explanations and, sometimes, light sedation to calm the young patient. Creating a welcoming and reassuring environment is essential to building trust and ensuring effective care.

Training and qualifications to become a pedodontist

Before you can apply for a jobas a pedodontist, you need to complete a long and rigorous academic course. Since it's not always easy to find your way around, let's take a look at how to become a pedodontist.

Education and qualifications

To qualify for a career in pedodontics, you must first obtain a bachelor's degree in science. Indeed, future studies will require a solid grounding in subjects such as science or biology.

After passing the baccalauréat, the student will have to follow three cycles consisting of one year of Parcours Accès Santé Spécifique (PASS) or Licence Accès Santé (L.AS), two years of general medical studies, then three years of in-depth training in odontological sciences.

Finally, future pedodontists complete their training through the internship system. This will enable him/her to become a dental surgeon, but not yet a pedodontist. To do so, they must specialize in pediatrics, either by completing a one-year diploma course in pediatric dentistry, or by taking a two-year university diploma in clinical pediatric dentistry.

In addition, students of pediatric dentistry can obtain their diploma in other European Union countries by completing a two-year course at a specialized university (whose certification is recognized by France).

In total, it takes 8years to become a pedodontist.

Skills required

Given the high level of expertise expected of pedodontists, they need to master a number of qualities, including the following:

  • Technical qualities: pedodontists must possess a wide range of technical skills specific to their field. This includes performing preventive and restorative treatments, managing dental emergencies and understanding the physiological particularities of children's teeth.
  • Interpersonal skills: the key to success in this profession. Pedodontists are in contact with a fragile and fearful population. They must therefore be patient, empathetic and able to establish a bond of trust with children and their parents. They must know how to reassure young patients and put them at ease, while maintaining effective communication with families.

Challenges of the pedodontist's profession

While we've already briefly touched on most of the challenges that pedodontists may face in their day-to-day work, it's important to reiterate them in the same place here:

  • Dealing with difficult behavior: this is one of the most specific issues in this profession. Difficult behavior can take many different forms, but most often includes negative feelings such as fear or anxiety, leading to non-cooperation or behavioral problems. In response, pedodontists need to be trained to use appropriate behavioral management techniques, such as distraction, behavioral modeling or the use of light sedation.
  • Treatment of complex pathologies: pedodontists may be confronted with complex dental pathologies that require special expertise. These include developmental anomalies, enamel disorders or early orthodontic needs. They must be able to diagnose and treat these conditions with appropriate interventions.
  • Educating parents and children about oral hygiene: education is an essential part of a pedodontist's work. He or she must constantly educate children and their parents about best oral hygiene practices, the importance of diet for dental health and the need for regular visits to the dentist.

Benefits of the profession

Since the profession of pedodontist is difficult and meticulous, it offers many subsequent benefits:

  • Satisfaction from working with children: receiving and caring for children can be extremely gratifying. Pedodontists have the opportunity to play a positive role in the lives of young patients, to see their oral health improve and to contribute to their well-being. The satisfaction of seeing children smile and helping them overcome their fears is a source of pride.
  • Professional development opportunities: the profession of pedodontist offers many. Pedodontists can specialize in specific areas, take part in clinical research or become involved in teaching and training future dental health professionals. They can also get involved in professional associations and public health initiatives, or obtain roles of responsibility in dental structures.

Status of pedodontists

Salary scale and influencing factors

Once they have completed theirstudies in pediatric dentistry, young practitioners have a number of options open to them:

  • Public sector : pedodontists can join hospitals, universities or community health centers. These positions offer job stability, benefits and opportunities in research and teaching. Working in the public sector may also involve participation in public health programs or prevention initiatives.
  • Private sector: pedodontists can open their own practices or work in specialized dental clinics. These structures offer greater autonomy and the ability to set fees freely. They also enable them to develop a loyal clientele and benefit from higher earning potential, especially in regions with high demand for pedodontic services.

Salary prospects for pedodontists

Earnings for pedodontists vary according to a number of criteria. These include

  • Experience: as in all professions, pedodontists at the start of their careers earn lower salaries. These will naturally rise as they gain experience.
  • Location: when setting up a practice, there are a number of criteria to take into account that will influence income. These include the standard of living of the local population, the prices charged by existing colleagues, and population density, which will determine the flow of patients.
  • Types of practice: as we saw earlier, pedodontists may work in different conditions, depending on whether they are in private practice, a dental center or a hospital. These practice conditions will inevitably have an impact on their income. A private practice pedodontist will generally earn more than a salaried one.
  • Technology: the use of modern, expensive equipment can increase the fees charged by a pedodontist's practice, thereby boosting his or her income.
  • Reputation: the quality of the practitioner's work, if recognized by patients or peers, will necessarily influence his or her attractiveness and therefore income.

All these factors, taken together, help define the average salary of a pedodontist.

Salary comparison by region

In France, pedodontist salaries vary from region to region. They are influenced by factors such as population density, standard of living, competition and demand for orthodontic services.

The regions where they enjoy the highest salaries are those with the greatest population density, since they offer a steady flow of patients. However, the level of competition can be higher in these areas, especially in larger conurbations. Finally, within the same city, the standard of living can vary from one neighborhood to another, further modifying these parameters.

The regions with the highest averagesalaries pedodontists:

What's more, advances in scientific knowledge and the development of new technologies make this a stimulating profession with a bright future. Practitioners who specialize in pediatric dental surgery can be sure of a fulfilling career in human, scientific and financial terms.
