The job of midwife sonographer: a particular specialization

The role and responsibilities of a midwife sonographer

In addition to her skills in obstetrics,a midwife sonographer specializes in the performance and interpretation of ultrasound scans. She therefore performs the three mandatory follow-up ultrasounds during pregnancy, as well as additional surveillance ultrasounds if required. This specialization enables her to detect any fetal anomalies, monitor the baby's growth and assess its well-being throughout the pregnancy.

The skills needed to practice ultrasound

To practice this specialty, midwives must obtain a Diplôme Inter-Universitaire (DIU) d'échographie en gynécologie-obstétrique, a demanding one-year training course. This training requires excellent knowledge of fetal anatomy, manual dexterity and the ability to analyze ultrasound images. Practice also requires regular updating of knowledge to keep pace with evolving technologies and protocols.

Basic salary for a midwife sonographer

Starting salary

An entry-level midwife sonographer in the public sector starts with a gross monthly salary of around 2,200 to 2,500 euros. In the private sector, starting salaries can be slightly higher, at around 2,500 to 2,800 euros gross per month. These amounts include the base salary as well as the bonus linked to ultrasound specialization.

Salary progression with experience

With experience, your salary will increase significantly. After 5 years' practice, a midwife can expect a gross monthly salary of between 3,000 and 3,500 euros in the public sector, and up to 4,000 euros in the private sector. This progression takes into account seniority, expertise developed and any additional responsibilities.

Factors influencing the salary of a midwife sonographer

Sector of activity: public, private, self-employed

The midwife's choice of sector of activity has a major impact on her remuneration. The public sector offers stability and benefits, but more moderate salaries. The private sector offers higher salaries, but with greater variability. As a self-employed midwife, earnings can be considerably higher, reaching between 6,000 and 8,000 euros gross per month, with the attendant responsibilities and charges.

Level of specialization and continuing education

The acquisition of additional skills has a positive impact on a midwife's income. Training in screening ultrasound, fetal heart ultrasound or serum markers enables access to better-paid procedures and significantly increases income, particularly in private practice. This additional training enables you to apply for better midwifery jobs.

Geographical location and demand

Income also varies according to the region in which you work. Densely populated urban areas generally offer higher salaries, but with greater competition. Rural or under-populated areas may offer financial incentives to attract professionals, with installation bonuses or specific benefits.
