How much does a pharmacist earn?

Barthélemy

All job sheets

Working alongside the doctor, the pharmacist guarantees the distribution of medicines and associated treatments, in compliance with legislation and best practices. As we have seen in our job description for pharmacists, they work most of the time in a pharmacy (or dispensary), but can also work in laboratories or even hospitals. In this context, they manage stocks, support patients in their care, take part in screening and vaccination campaigns, and manage other aspects of the pharmacy's operations.

Factors influencing dispensary remuneration

The following is a non-exhaustive list of criteria used to determine a pharmacist's remuneration:

  • Experience: pharmacists at the start of their careers generally have lower salaries, but these will rise automatically as they gain experience and move up in the structure's hierarchy, from assistant pharmacist to managing pharmacist, for example.
  • Location: when setting up shop, pharmacists need to take into account a number of criteria that will influence their income. These include the standard of living of the local population, the location of the pharmacy and the population density, which will determine the flow of business.
  • Types of practice: as we saw earlier, pharmacists can work in very different conditions. For example, a pharmacist working in a private clinic will earn more than a pharmacist employed in a traditional dispensary.

Salary scale for pharmacists in 2023

Often (if not always), a pharmacist's salary is set according to the associated sector's salary scale. This ensures that professional salaries increase with seniority, and provides a benchmark when applying for a pharmacist job. On average, pharmacists are paid between coefficients 500 and 600 in the following table:

Recent advances and salary reforms

The latest revaluation of the SMIC in January 2024 has had an impact on the pharmaceutical sector. Although pharmacists' salaries are generally higher than the minimum income, it has led to an increase in salaries in certain structures, particularly for assistants and technicians.

Recent regulatory changes have also had an impact on salaries in this specialty. New laws aimed at improving working conditions and enhancing recognition of specialist skills have led to adjustments in remuneration. These reforms aim to attract more professionals to the sector and ensure a better distribution of pharmacists across the country.

Improving your salary as a pharmacist

Throughout their career, pharmacists can take advantage of a number of levers to improve their salaries, such as..:

  • Training: additional certifications in oncology, geriatrics or pharmacotherapy can increase their value on the job market and enable them to negotiate higher salaries.
  • Relocation: by changing employer and moving to a high-tension region, pharmacists are likely to earn higher incomes.
  • Salary negotiation: in addition to the base salary, it is possible to negotiate benefits such as bonuses, additional paid vacations, employer-paid training or flexible working hours. Good preparation, an overall understanding of the market and their personal value can help pharmacists to obtain more advantageous working conditions.
  • Entrepreneurship: becoming the owner or co-owner of a pharmacy can be lucrative, even if it entails risks and requires an initial investment.

In conclusion, pharmacists' salaries depend on multiple factors, such as experience, training and location. By investing in ongoing training and adopting effective negotiation strategies, these professionals are likely to improve their salary prospects and working conditions.
