Welcome to this new job description, dedicated to the profession of radiologist. In this article, we explore the career of this medical imaging expert. We'll take a look at what you need to study to become a radiologist, what skills you'll need to master, and what opportunities you'll have throughout your professional life.
What is a radiologist?
A radiologist is a doctor who specializes in the use of medical imaging to diagnose or treat pathologies. Thanks to advanced technologies such as X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound, this specialist is able to determine anomalies invisible to the naked eye, playing a crucial role in the patient care process.
The main tasks of a radiologist
On a day-to-day basis, radiologists carry out a number of activities, as listed below:
- Performing medical imaging examinations: using various imaging techniques (X-ray, MRI, CT scan, ultrasound) to carry out examinations on patients.
- Interpreting results: analyzing and interpreting images to detect abnormalities such as fractures, tumors, infections or other pathologies.
- Medical report writing: preparation of detailed reports for referring physicians, including observations, diagnostic conclusions and recommendations.
- Consultation with patients: explaining examination results to patients, answering their questions and providing them with understandable information.
- Imaging-guided interventional procedures: performing procedures such as biopsies, drainages or radiofrequency treatments.
- Participation in multidisciplinary meetings: working with other medical specialists to discuss complex cases and develop treatment plans.
- Training and research: involvement in training activities for medical students and participation in research projects to develop new imaging techniques.
- Maintaining and improving technical skills: ongoing training and adaptation to new technologies.
Training to become a radiologist
To apply for a job as a radiologist, you need to follow one of the longest and most demanding academic paths available. This compulsory rigor ensures that the best possible specialists are trained, because radiologists handle tools which, if misused, can worsen the state of a patient's health. The use of radiation-emitting equipment must be precisely calibrated to produce qualitative results, while preserving the physical integrity of those exposed to it. The radiologist must be able to adapt to any situation presented to him or her. To better understand this aspect, let's explain how to become a radiologist.
First of all, aspiring gynecologists need to have a general scientific baccalaureate. While other paths may lead to medical studies, the scientific stream has the advantage of providing an indispensable grounding in a wide range of subjects. Once this initial diploma has been obtained, the student can move on to the Parcours Accès Santé Spécifique (PASS) or the Licence avec Accès Santé (L.AS). A year later, and subject to success, they will enter the first cycle of general medical studies, common to all specialties and lasting 3 years (the PASS and L.AS count as the first). At the end of these three years, the student obtains the Diplôme de Formation Générale en Sciences Médicales (DFGSM) and enters the second cycle as an extern. Also lasting 3 years, this will enable students to deepen their knowledge through an equal balance between theoretical courses and practical hospital work. At the end of the program, students sit the final externship exams (EDN and ECOS), the results of which give them the opportunity to choose their specialty (in order of priority according to ranking).
Once committed to specializing in radiology, they will have 5 or 6 more years of radiology studies under the internship system, enabling them to learn in greater detail all the nuances of this profession and apply them within French healthcare structures. Depending on the specialty chosen, this final cycle leads to the Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées en Radiologie et Imagerie Médicale or en Radiologie Interventionnelle Avancée.
