Education and training to become an orthopaedic surgeon
To become an orthopaedic surgeon and apply for a job as an orthopaedic surgeon, you need to follow one of the most demanding academic paths in the French medical system. This rigor is essential: orthopedists work directly on the human skeleton, sometimes operating in emergency situations where the slightest technical error can have lasting functional consequences (i.e. permanent disability). Surgical gestures must therefore be absolutely precise, implants perfectly positioned, and each operation anticipated through rigorous planning. To achieve this level of expertise, orthopaedic surgeons must undergo a demanding training program that enables them to adapt to a multitude of anatomical, traumatic and degenerative situations.
It all starts with a general baccalaureate with a focus on science. Although other routes are theoretically possible, the scientific stream is the best preparation for medical studies. Once you've passed your baccalauréat, you'll need to pass the Parcours Accès Santé Spécifique (PASS) or a Licence avec Accès Santé (L.AS), which will enable you to enter medical school. The first cycle (3 years, including PASS) gives access to the Diplôme de Formation Générale en Sciences Médicales (DFGSM) and introduces the fundamentals of medicine.
Students then enter the externat, a 3-year second cycle divided between theoretical courses and hospital internships. Finally, the young graduate must sit the final externat exams (EDN and ECNOS), the results of which will enable him or her to choose a specialty.
Specialization in orthopaedic surgery then lasts 5 years, in the form of an internship in various surgical departments. Here, students learn different surgical techniques, management of musculoskeletal pathologies, and diagnostic and post-operative approaches. At the end of this course, they are awarded the Diplôme d'Études Spécialisées (DES) in Orthopaedic and Traumatological Surgery.
