The profession of dental surgeon plays a decisive role in maintaining the oral health of the population. To give you a better understanding of this career, we take a look at every aspect of it, from the qualifications required to average salaries and the skills required. An overview of an exciting profession.
What is a dental surgeon?
Alongside general practitioners, dentists are the best-known and most frequently consulted health specialists. A true point of entry into the world of oral health, he or she is trained to treat diseases and disorders affecting the teeth, gums and related structures of the mouth. His or her missions are very diverse! They can provide preventive care, surgery, cosmetic treatments and advice on maintaining good hygiene.
Training and career paths to become a dental surgeon
Education and qualifications
To become a dental surgeon, you need to follow a rigorous academic path. In France, this starts with a scientific baccalaureate, followed by a first year in the Parcours Accès Santé Spécifique (PASS) or Licence Accès Santé (L.AS).
Once you've completed these initial steps, you'll need to complete two years of studies in odontological sciences, followed by two years of advanced training in odontological sciences. These same studies can be pursued abroad, at faculties in the European Union.
At the end of the course, students must complete an internship to perfect their theoretical knowledge while familiarizing themselves with the practical side of the profession. Once all these stages have been completed, the student is awarded the Diplôme d'Etat de Docteur en chirurgie dentaire.
Specializations in dental surgery
After graduating as a dental surgeon, some professionals choose to specialize further, for example in orthodontics, periodontology or implantology. These further training courses vary in length, and can sometimes be taken in parallel with practice.

Roles and responsibilities of the dental surgeon
As we saw above, dentists are the guarantors of their patients' oral health. This includes a whole range of responsibilities and skills, from diagnosing dental disease to carrying out treatments such as fillings, tooth extractions and more complex surgical procedures. In addition to these day-to-day practices, the dental hygienist must also provide advice on prevention and hygiene to avoid recurrences.
A dental surgeon's working environment and daily practice
Whether in a private practice, a dental center or a hospital, a dental surgeon's working environment is varied. Before you can apply for a job as a dental surgeon, you need to know the main ones. Presentations.
The different workplaces
- Privatepractice : this is the most common workplace for dentists, as they can choose their own equipment, working hours and team. They treat a wide variety of cases and develop a loyal patient base, with personalized care and regular follow-up. Freedom to practice is greater than elsewhere, and fees can be set freely.
- Dental centers: these structures, often located in densely populated areas, can handle a wide variety of cases. Patient flow is higher here than in the practice, which influences the frequency and duration of appointments. They are multi-disciplinary entities, usually with shared equipment. As sector 1 dental centers, they offer treatment at more affordable rates than practices, thanks to subsidized models, so that patients on modest incomes can access quality care.
- Hospital: in this sector, dentists are rarer and cases more complex. They collaborate with other specialists to treat patients with complex pathologies. These facilities are generally better equipped to deal effectively with emergencies. Thanks to subsidies, underprivileged populations can obtain specific care there.
- Medworking: this solution is a good compromise for dentists who wish to combine the freedom of independent practice with the advantages of salaried employment, as it enables them to rent an entire functional workspace without having to invest a large sum of money at the outset, while simplifying the administrative burden to a minimum so that they can concentrate on the care they provide. What's more, rental rates depend on the time spent using the space and equipment, helping to reduce costs.
Tools and technologies used in dental surgery
The technologies used by dentists have evolved significantly in recent years. They now include digital X-rays, intra-oral scanners, dental lasers, computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems and practice management software. These tools improve the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment, while enhancing patient comfort.
In addition, the recent development of artificial intelligence (AI) is tending to invest the field. For example, the AI Allisone (a French company!) provides dentists with a responsive and educational radiographic analysis tool. This technology not only strengthens mutual trust between patient and practitioner, but also increases efficiency and adherence to treatment. It's a remarkable step forward, and one that augurs well for the future.
Key skills and qualities required of a dental surgeon
A dental surgeon needs to master a variety of technical, interpersonal and personal skills, of which we can give a non-exhaustive list:

Salary of a dental surgeon
Salary scale and influencing factors
Dentists' salaries vary according to a number of factors:
- Experience: as in all professions, dentists at the start of their careers earn lower salaries than their experienced counterparts. As they gain experience and build up a loyal patient base, their income will increase.
- Location: when setting up a practice, there are a number of criteria to take into account that will influence income. These include the standard of living of the local population, the rates charged by existing colleagues, and the population density, which will determine the flow of patients.
- Types of practice: as we saw earlier, dentists can work in very different environments. These practice conditions will inevitably have an impact on income. A dentist working in a private practice will generally earn more than a salaried colleague in a dental center.
- Technology: the use of modern, expensive equipment can increase the fees charged by the dentist's practice, thereby boosting his or her income.
- Reputation: the quality of a dentist's work, if recognized by patients or peers, will necessarily influence his or her attractiveness and therefore income.
