Presentation of the dental technician profession
Dental technicians are oral health professionals specializing in the design, manufacture and repair of dental prostheses. They work closely with dentists and orthodontists to meet patients' functional and aesthetic needs.
Role and main tasks of the dental technician
The dental technician plays an essential role in the dental care chain. Main tasks include :
- Designing and fabricating custom-made prostheses from impressions and dentist's prescriptions.
- Using a variety of materials and fabrication techniques to create functional and esthetic prostheses.
- Working with dentists to analyze patient needs and propose the most appropriate prosthetic solutions.
- Repairing and adjusting existing prostheses to ensure comfort and durability.
What's more, this profession requires not only a passion for the field, but also related qualities, such as good manual dexterity to handle high-precision tools and carry out meticulous work; rigor and attention to detail to ensure the quality and durability of the prostheses produced; good aesthetic sensitivity to recreate teeth that blend in perfectly with the patient's natural dentition; and an attraction for new technologies that are redefining the standards of the profession. Training paths to become a dental technician
The bac pro prothèse dentaire: a first step
In France, the profession of dental technician is accessible to everyone from high school, thanks to a dedicated vocational bac or a 3-year Brevet Technique des Métiers (BTM). The latter combine general and vocational teaching.
Training content- General subjects: mathematics, physics-chemistry, French, history-geography, modern languages, etc.
- Vocational courses: prosthesis manufacturing techniques, industrial design, modeling, use of materials (resins, ceramics, metals), laboratory health and safety.
- Internships: 22 weeks of internships spread over the three years, enabling students to familiarize themselves with the tools and methods of the trade.
Contents of dental technician studies
After the vocational baccalaureate, students can continue their studies to become a dental technician towards a CAP or BTS. Both options contain a range of modules designed to equip students with the skills they need to integrate easily into the professional world that awaits them. Both courses last 3 years.
Technical modules: prosthesis design and manufacture
Prosthodontics courses include technical modules that teach the dental materials, tools and technologies used in prosthesis design and manufacture. Students also learn how to read and interpret dental impressions to create customized prostheses.
Artistic modules: aesthetic sense and manual work
The courses also include artistic modules that develop students' sense of aesthetics and manual dexterity. These skills are essential for creating dental prostheses that blend harmoniously with the natural dentition.
Practical training in a dental laboratory or practice
Dental prosthesis training courses include practical placements in a dental laboratory or practice. These internships enable students to put their theoretical knowledge into practice and gain professional experience, making it easier to apply for dental technician jobs.
What's more, these years of study are punctuated by internships and practical projects, enabling students to gain experience in preparation for entering the job market. At the same time, this training can be done on a sandwich basis, with time shared between school and the company.
Career opportunities after studies
Once they have completed their academic studies, graduates can choose from a wide range of career opportunities, including :
- Working in a dental laboratory as an employee or freelancer. This option offers stability and the chance to specialize.
- Setting up or taking over a dental laboratory. This option enables you to become self-employed and run your own business, but requires management skills and a financial investment.
- Progress to specialized positions, acquiring recognized expertise and rising to positions of responsibility.

- Take further training courses to keep abreast of technological developments and acquire new skills.
- Turn to teaching to pass on your know-how to future generations of dental technicians.
Graduating dental technicians may also decide to specialize further, in order to enhance the value of their skills and make them more attractive on the job market, thus benefiting from better opportunities and higher remuneration. Existing specialties include :
- Fixed prosthetics: crowns, bridges and other fixed structures, often in ceramic or zirconia.
- Removable prosthetics: manufacture of partial or complete dentures, in resin or metal, for edentulous patients.
- Orthodontics: design of corrective appliances such as aligners, trays or fixed devices.

New technologies are revolutionizing this field, making it more precise and technical than ever before. These rapid advances are forcing dental technicians to keep up with the times, enriching their daily lives and careers, and making the prospects for this career all the more exciting.
