Job File: Dietician
Our consumer society has largely de-emphasized the quality of its diet, whether in terms of quality, intake or habit. Eating disorders linked to this lifestyle have thus given the dietary tier an increased role in the French health system. This specialist in food and nutrition therefore deserved a special listing on our site.
What is a diététician?
A diététician is a health professional specializing in nutrition. Their role is to assess their patients' dietary needs and develop personalized nutritional plans based on their health status, goals and pathologies. They may work in hospitals, practices, schools or companies, and play a key role in prevention, nutritional education and dietary follow-up. He also works in collaboration with physicians and other health professionals, particularly in the management of diabetes, obesity, digestive disorders and cardiovascular disease. He can intervene both curatively and preventively, adapting diet to improve or maintain health. He can also run workshops or information campaigns on dietary balance for the general public.
The role and missions of the dietary expert
The missions of the diacute;téticien are as varied as a week's worth of meals! In no particular order:
- Établish a nutritional assessment: this provides a complete overview of the patient's diet to identify his or her needs and propose an adapted plan.

The training path to becoming a diététicien

- Le BTS : dans la foulée, le bachelier rejoint un BTS Diététique pour deux ans, au cours duquel il apprend tous les aspects du métier afin d’êêtre opérationnel dès sa sortie.
After graduation, some dieticians choose to specialize (sports nutrition, pediatrics, geriatrics) or take courses in micronutrition, dietary behavior, or therapeutic patient education.

Working conditions and places of practice
Hospital practice
In hospital establishments, dialecticians occupy a strategic position within care teams. Their role is not confined to the development of diets, but includes active participation in the overall therapeutic strategy. In collaboration with doctors, nurses and other health professionals, they adapt patients' diets according to the pathologies encountered, current treatments and the nutritional status of each individual. Their presence is particularly essential in specialized departments such as digestive surgery, cancerology, diabetes, gynecology and cardiology;tology, diabetes and geriatrics, where diet plays a key role in the recovery and quality of life of hospitalized patients.
Activity as a freelancer or in private practice;
Many dialecticians choose to practice in private practice, a mode of practice that is distinguished by its autonomy and the diversity of the profiles encountered. They welcome their patients into the practice, provide individual or couple consultations, develop personalized programs and set up regular follow-up over several weeks or months. Some expand their activities by running group workshops on topics such as family nutrition, eating disorders or healthy cooking. However, this status requires solid management, communication and business development skills, in particular to build a stable patient base and ensure the practice's economic viability (see our article Travailler en libéral en France : tout ce qu'il faut savoir).
Interventions in communities or in the food industry
Beyond the medical sector, dieticians are also called upon in collective or industrial contexts. In the public sector (schools, nursing homes, specialized care facilities), they develop menus adapted to the specific needs of the public, participate in food education and guarantee the nutritional balance of the meals served. In the agri-food sector, their expertise is put to good use when designing or reformulating products, establishing nutritional benefits in line with regulations, or supporting marketing strategies based on health and well-being. This diversity of environments demonstrates the transversal nature of nutritional expertise.
Career prospects
Specialization in clinical or sports nutrition
As the years go by and experience grows, the work of a diétician can focus on a specific field, developing a cutting-edge expertise. In clinical nutrition, this means working with patients suffering from complex chronic pathologies (renal failure, metabolic diseases, cancer), in close collaboration with medical teams. Others opt for sports nutrition, offering tailor-made care for amateur and professional athletes, focusing on performance, recovery and injury prevention. These specializations can be reinforced by further training or university degrees, and provide access to the best diét;tician job offers.
Accès à training or research functions
Some professionals wish to pass on their knowledge or deepen their understanding through teaching or research. As trainers, they can be found working in dialect schools, IFSIs or continuing education organizations. In research, they contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge in nutrition, by participating in clinical studies, interdisciplinary projects or public health programs. This orientation often requires complementary skills in pedagogy, scientific methodology and academic action.
Possibilité de création ou reprise de cabinet
Finally, entrepreneurship is a natural path for many experienced diéticians. By setting up their own practice or taking over an existing structure, they can build a project that reflects their image, choose their speciality, organize their schedule and diversify their services (distance consultations, coaching, partnerships with other professionals such as psychologists or sports coaches). This process requires initiative, a strategic vision and, in some cases, specific support to secure the launch phase.
The carriage of diététicien is therefore rich, complex and exciting. It represents a key asset in our healthcare system, and possesses major levers on public health issues.
